Amarildo, 9 month old, with the mother Imported Girl, the breeder Luiz Eduardo Lages (owner and breeder of Baependi Stud and founder of Haras Baependi in Sweden) and our guest and good friend José Carlos Fragoso Pires Júnior, owner and breeder of the many times champion of the statistics in both category, in all the Brazilian nation, the exemplar Haras Santa Ana do Rio Grande, in one of his visits to our farm in Sweden. José Carlos Fragoso Pires Júnior is the breeder, between great cracks, of Riboletta, Redattore, Super Power and Magnum Opus (Amarildo brothers, with the same father, the leader many times of the statistics, Roi Normand), Bowling, Carteziano, Falcon Jet, and many other exceptional and famous horses that belong to our international history. Riboletta and Redattore won together almost 4 million dollar in price money, only counting in USA (and without to count in theirs own and common land Brazil or Canada where the total together was much more), most because the stallion Roi Normand (the father of our Amarildo), died the year 2007, that was also own by José Carlos Fragoso Pires Júnior responsible for the importation of this fantastic sire. Roi Normand best product, Riboletta, also won the "Eclipse Award", year 2000 in the USA, as the best mare in USA and being unanimous "Number 1" in the world in the official list of "The International Cataloguing Standards" from the "International Federation of Horse Racing Authorities", in January 2001. All those titles without any kind of doubt and with all the merit!

MY PRINCE, THE CRACK FROM BAEPENDI STUD

MY PRINCE, from our "Baependi Stud", being successful in the photo above, winning easily "The Great Mile" in the same day of the "GRANDE PRÊMIO BRASIL" ("Brazilian Great Prize")! The year was 1953. At that time, in the absence of the "International Mile", it was the test most important in this classic and noble distance! The consecration of a great race-horse of quality! Without the minimum doubt, after the "Grande Prêmio Brasil", the test most selective of the program and that currently it would be the "International Mile" and obviously classified as Group 1! The day most important of the year and, at the same time, the mile most important of the international week! In this glorious day, MY PRINCE defeated great runners as EGEU, GOLD DREAM, MONT ROYAL, PASSE PARTOUT, RONCADOR and many other horses of unquestionable qualities, at the time recognized as the decade of gold, not only in the turf, but for all the country, popularly acclaimed as "the golden years".

The fantastic pedigree of My Prince, complete until the fifth generation and much more victories and photos, to consult link that follows: MY PRINCE, THE CRACK FROM BAEPENDI STUD.

MY PRINCE, THE CRACK FROM BAEPENDI STUD

Listed Race in Gávea Racecourse, turf, 1 mile, 1953.

MY PRINCE as sire - 3 products in Brazilian Stud-Book: Lucky Prince, Larochea and Moss Rose. Lucky Prince, good handicap horse, won 12 races in Gávea Racecourse, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Larochea produced Duraque, winner of "Grande Prêmio Brasil - 1967", Group 1, in Gávea Racecourse, Rio de Janeiro. My Prince died very early in the stud, when begun his time as sire in Fazenda Santa Ángela, Paraná, Brazil.

SIR TOBY, THE FAIRLY GOOD HORSE FROM BAEPENDI STUD

The founder of Stud Baependi, admiral Mario Luiz de Lima Lages, receiving SIR TOBY, mounted by the seven times champion-jockey Manoel Silva, after the son of Winter Garden to win in his debut with 2 years old, beating the future classic horse Cedro, mounted by the biggest legend of the golden years, Luiz Rigoni, in a animation race for 2 years old in Gávea Racetrack, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 8 May 1955

The founder of Stud Baependi, admiral Mario Luiz de Lima Lages, receiving SIR TOBY, mounted by one of the greatest champion-jockeys of all the times, Manoel Silva, called "Bequinho", champion of seven statistics in Gávea Racetrack, in the State of Rio de Janeiro and in all Brazil: five in a row (1956 until 1960) and two more, also in a row (1962 and 1963). In this race, just in his debut, SIR TOBY gave a potential demonstration, after having a very bad start, came back in the race for to win very easy and comfortable. He beat colts and fillies in one "Animation Stakes" for 2 years old showing to be really a promise! Sir Toby needed to give only little of his capacity in his first start, with lot of things against, as the distance and in the dirt track (he proved always to be much better on the turf). Anyway, even with important conditions against his characteristics, to win in his debut with great style, beating, between very good colts and fillies, the future classic horse Cedro, mounted by the greatest legend of the golden years, the magic jockey Luiz Rigoni, in one stake race for 2 years old, was more than we could dream in that time! All this details are more significant because was just in Gávea Racetrack, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the more competitive, specially when Rio de Janeiro still was the capital of the country. The date we never can forget was 8 May 1955. The interesting and curious is that SIR TOBY coasted 10 times less at the yearling action than Cedro, that was easily beat by SIR TOBY as the photo show clearly.

SIR TOBY, AGAIN, EASY WINNING FOR BAEPENDI STUD

Miraluz, by Fort Napoléon, out of the classic racing and broodmare Quadrilha, from the Haras São Jossé e Expedictus, was owned and bred by the more important breeder in the history of the Brazilian Turf, the family Paula Machado. The Argentinean classic as racer and broodmare, La Vestal, the second mother of ÉTICA gave only two products, both classics, in the stud-record, the named here Orange, mother of ÉTICA, and Quick Chance, one of the leaders of the good generation born 1957 and absolutely best miler of his generation. Quick Chance won the Grande Prémio Presidente da República, the Brazilian International Mile (always Group 1 after the first classification of the classics and stakes in Group, by the International Cataloguing Standards), and the Grande Prémio Outono, equivalent to the Brazilian 2000 Guineas (also always Group 1, after the first classification of the classics and stakes in Group, by the International Cataloguing Standards). Today is running with a new name, Grande Prémio Estado do Rio de Janeiro and, of course, continuous to be equivalent to the Brazilian 2000 Guineas. La Vestal, by Advocate and La Ga&ucute;cha, has one very good broodmare line, belonging to the Family 4-b of the classification by the Australian born Bruce Lowe.

- RANKING OF BRAZILIAN RACING -

- HORSES BORN AND BRED IN BRAZIL -

- XX CENTURY -

FINAL CLASSIFICATION OF THE 205 BEST HORSES FROM BRAZIL

BY LUIZ EDUARDO LAGES

LUIZ EDUARDO LAGES was the first, after a very long time of studies, to publish one selection, with the classification of the best horses born and bred in Brazil in the last century! But, he did even more, selected 200 products from Brazil that started in the XX century, without doubt, the more important in our development and evolution on the turf! His final result is also considerate by many people around the world, the most a person can do in this question, including a perfect analyse, very well detailed in this very difficult case, the comparable of qualities between legends from the XX century! But, Lages never included a simple sympathy, and should not answer in some short moments, like so many people use and like to do. This needs very much more time than to answer with a simple opinion, like so many turfmen have the vicious to do. LAGES RANKING about horses from Brazil, is a serious work, after many years of intensive investigation, a really research with all types of inquires, from just a person neutral and that never played one simple cent in racehorses for to not lose the power to be able to judge! His work, after all kinds of observations and studies was the first and always was the more easy to be acceptable in Brazil and by another international experts around the world. Only this fact, proves very well why his site "Lages Homepage" is so popular with the racing people all over the globe and his list the only published for serious sites in the Internet, magazines and newspapers, in all different mediums, from all type of turfs and countries, in all the five continents! The text, as always in this site, was written by me, LUIZ EDUARDO LAGES, this time about myself and the serious work, gaining lot of reputation like results, when was the first to do one list about the best horses from last century! Sorry my missing of modesty, but those things is really facts! And when is so, like all the really facts, no one can contest!
It's very different than another sites and all the publications that make question to write and say when they inquire people about the best horses, even without any kind of science or demand explanation.
In our site Lages Homepage the opinions is based on science and proved with results! Otherwise any kind or sort of opinions does not have scientific value!
In Lages Homepage, the facts are facts!

CENTRE OF TRAINING VERDE E PRETO, in Teresópolis, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The "Centre of Training Verde e Preto", belonging to the Municipality of the city Teresópolis, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with approximately 900 meters of altitude above sea level, having, between as many wealth, water springs of first quality, a shape establishment to breed, initiate and prepare the race horse. It started with specific functions to breed, with the name of "Haras Verde e Preto", proceeding from the "Stud Verde e Preto", very traditional and shining many decades as owner, for long time, since the decade of years 40, in the last century, always been one of the exponents in the Brazilian Turf! The "Centre of Training Verde e Preto" is, without the minimum doubt, one of the best of Brazil and the entire world. Another advantage, the "training centre" is situated only 90 kilometers from the "Hipódromo da Gávea", in the south zone of the town, called by many visitors "The Wonderful City"! That is how the city of Rio de Janeiro is known all over the world.
